How Do You Brew?

Special Recommendations from CT Caffeine!

Grinder

A burr grinder is going to give you the most consistent grind, which is what you want when making coffee. Burr grinders can get a bit pricey, but if you're new to the home coffee world or don't want to break the bank, I recommend the Cusinart Electric Burr Coffee Grinder.

Simple syrup

Simple syrup is exactly that, two simple base ingredients - sugar and water - then you can add different elements to make the flavor of your choice. My favorites are vanilla, lavender, and blueberry mint. You can add as little or as much as you want to your coffee so the flavor and sweetness is to your liking. I'm including a recipe for an easy vanilla simple syrup. For lavender simple syrup, swap out the vanilla bean seeds for two tablespoons of dried lavender flowers (and two crushed blueberries for color).

-Open 1 vanilla bean pod by cutting a line from top to bottom. Scrape seeds out using the back of the knife or a spoon.

-Combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and vanilla bean seeds in a saucepan.

-Bring ingredients to a boil over medium heat, reduce to low heat and let simmer for 15-20 minutes.

-Let simple syrup cool and pour into your simple syrup bottle. Store in the refrigerator and use within a couple of weeks.

Product Recommendations

Below are some general product recommendations for your home coffee life:

What should we looks for when trying a new coffee shop?

  • Look for a place that roasts their own beans or uses another local shop's beans!

How do you keep your beans fresh?

Do you prefer to make your own sweetener or buy?

  • I prefer to make my own because I can keep the ingredient list small, like the simple syrup recipe I included. Making my own also allows me to try new concoctions which can be fun! If I do buy a flavor syrup, 1883 is my favorite brand.
